WASHINGTON (AP) – In his first post-president speech, Donald Trump maintained his core flaws in the elections, mistakenly blaming wind power for the catastrophic power outages in Texas, and revitalized a host of unsubstantiated claims that satiated his term in office about immigration. the economy and more.
A look at Trump’s remarks on Sunday at the Conservative Political Action Conference:
TRUMP attacks democrats in energy policy: “The windmill disaster that we are experiencing in Texas … it’s so sad when you look at it. That will only be the beginning.”
TRUMP of President Joe Biden: “He wants windmills. … The windmills that don’t work when you need them.”
THE FACTS: “Windmill disaster” is a wrong description. The blackouts during Texas’s heavy February storm were mostly due to outages in natural gas, coal and nuclear systems, not wind and solar.
These traditional sources were responsible for nearly twice as many outages as frozen wind turbines and solar panels, according to the Texas Electric Reliability Council, which operates the state’s power grid.
ERCOT reported that of the 45,000 megawatts of electricity that were offline nationwide during the winter storm, around 30,000 came from thermal sources – gas, coal and nuclear power plants – and 16,000 came from renewable sources. Wind provides only about a quarter of the electricity in Texas.
