A doctor in Philadelphia developed ScentClip, an aromatherapy clip that can be attached to any mask.

“I was a trained anesthetist, and that’s where the idea came about and, as you know, we spent hours in the operating rooms just looking after the patients. Wear a mask from the beginning to the end of the day, ”said Mark-Alan Pizzini, CEO of Aroxel, manufacturer of Scentclip.

Dr. Pizzini said he came up with the idea years ago, but the pandemic pushed him to sell it. Now they are filling around 200 orders a week.

“People started wearing masks like, wow. Now we really have to get that out of it, ”said Dr. Pizzini.

Dr. Pizzini runs the company with the help of his daughters with a business background and his wife, who also works in the medical field.

“I’ve always loved aromatherapy, I have candles all over my house. When Mark came home with this idea and said, “What do you think of that?” and I think I said I think people would love it, ”said Deborah Sesok-Pizzini, an Aroxel partner.

“This is my first business purpose. I thought of the scented mask plaster. I found that many people, including myself, felt uncomfortable smelling of face masks, ”said Bumjun Kim, CEO of SLEEKS.

Kim, who lives in Seattle, sells his scented masking plasters on Etsy.

“All patches are handmade. The patches also have a smiley face to encourage people to stay strong in this pandemic, “Kim said.

In Brooklyn, New York, Eddie Betesh developed long-lasting fragrance formulas for spraying on masks.

“So we developed a formula with natural ingredients. It’s safe to wear and smells great, ”said Betesh, CEO of BestSmelling.com, who sells their scented masks on their website and on Etsy.

“We currently sell over 1,800 masks a week. Sales grew by 12 to 13% daily, ”said Betesh.

The innovation doesn’t surprise longtime small business experts.

Michael Kane, the Eastern Pennsylvania District assistant district director of the Small Business Administration, said, “Entrepreneurs, small business owners … they are incredibly innovative, incredibly adaptable, and flexible,” said Kane.

The increase in new business is part of the trend.

“You know, we are seeing new companies, also given the challenges with COVID-19.”

“For people out there who want to keep their daughters close – this is a great option. Start a business with them. They will call you and stay in touch with you, ”said Dr. Pizzini.

Some are hopeful that small businesses hiring new employees could be the engine for boosting the economy as more than 10 million Americans remain unemployed, according to the Department of Labor.
