Detroit skilled sports activities leaders converse on significance of variety in administration roles

DETROIT – More than 70% of NFL players are colored people. In the NBA, that number is even higher.

However, those in top roles often don’t look like the players who lead them. In Detroit, both Lions and Pistons have black men in prominent leadership roles.

“I hope to be able to be the same symbolism of hope to younger black and brown children that can look up to people like me,” said Brad Holmes, Lions general manager, who was recently hired in January.

There have been seven general manager positions open in the NFL that year. Only two of them went to Black me, which doubled the number of minority general managers in the league.

“We need to make more efforts to improve diversity at the GM level,” said Holmes. “Less than 10% are in the Director of College Scouting … less than 10% in the Assistant GM role. It would be a step forward to add more diversity to these levels in order to make the pipeline even stronger. “
