EAST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A popular Christmas tradition for many Los Angeles families continued in earnest Thursday morning despite the pandemic.

People stood in front of Tamales Liliana on the 4600 block of East Cesar Chavez Avenue in East LA, starting at 2 a.m. to purchase their delicious tamales.
At smaller gatherings, people don’t buy as many tamales as they have in years past.
Still, the staff said they are grateful to be able to help families respect their traditions.
“It was difficult for a lot of people during this COVID period,” said one employee. “We are honestly very grateful for the whole community and for the communities that surround us – for coming down and supporting us.”
Tamales Liliana’s has been selling their tamales for 30 years and is usually big business at this time of year.
“They don’t buy as much as they used to,” manager Manny Bernal told CBSLA last week. “For example, let’s say a family would typically buy four to five dozen, now they’re looking at somewhere between a dozen and a dozen and a half.”
Despite smaller orders, tamales were still in high demand on Christmas Eve. The restaurant should close around 6:00 p.m. However, the queue was so long that it stayed open until 9pm to serve every customer.
Under the regional home-stay ordinance currently in effect in Southern California through December 28, all public and private gatherings with other households except for church services and protests are prohibited.
