Former Tam standout Shakur advances to Nationals
Karim Shakur made an automatic spot in the NAIA Wrestling Nationals after finishing second in the £ 184 class at the Heart of America Conference Tournament that weekend.
Shakur, a former Tam high star, was reunited as number 2 in the first round. Shakur won his quarterfinal game with a needle in the third period and won his semifinal game with a 7-5 decision of a sudden victory.
This victory sent Shakur to the final and qualified him for the national team. Shakur fell 12-0 in the championship game against top seed Ben Lee from Grand View.
Nationals are scheduled to take place in Wichita, Kan., March 5-6.
College tires
Jordan Williams hit a season high of 24 points to lead the Dominican University men’s basketball team to an 84-79 win over the Academy of Art on Saturday night.
The Penguins (2-2, 2-1 PacWest) led most of the game and never lagged behind them after the first few minutes of play. Academy of Art moved within 78-73 with 2 minutes, 22 seconds of play, but a basketball from Romeo Mays pushed the lead back to 80-73.
The Urban Knights scored three points in the last minute but Williams went 4-4 down the track from the free throw line to secure victory.
