Since its inception, the East Side Youth Sports Foundation has fulfilled its mission of helping young people discover the joy of sport. Through ice hockey, soccer, football, baseball, lacrosse and other activities, the organization promotes good citizenship and promotes athleticism and physical well-being among local youth.

Now the nonprofit is asking the community for help in showing support outside of the sports area and is turning its attention to the arena of local restaurants.

The foundation’s Pay It Forward campaign started less than a month ago and has already been successful.

“We have partnered with City Kitchen and Trattoria Serventi,” said Lisa Francis, foundation administrator. “We’re selling $ 100 gift cards at each location. Of this, $ 90 goes to the restaurant and the other $ 10 to the foundation. The restaurants get the money now when they need it. “

Francis said it was time to support local restaurants struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the restaurant’s dining rooms recently reopened, “everyone wants to eat out anyway,” she said. “We thought it wasn’t a bad idea if the restaurants were wild.”

The foundation selected City Kitchen and Trattoria Serventi for their reasonably priced menus as well as their locations – one closer to the north end of Pointes, the other more central. She hopes the campaign will help attract businesses to the region.

“We’re an integral part of the community, so we want to support other people in the community because they support us,” said Francis. “It’s what we do – try to help people who need help. The more people we can bring into the community, the better. “

While most of the money raised through the Pay-It-Forward campaign will go to the restaurants, the percentage of the foundation will go towards the Try Hockey For Free program for disadvantaged children. The program is one of several offers from the foundation and its partner organizations.

Pay It Forward runs until the end of March; Gift certificates can be purchased online at esysf.networkforgood.com/events/25927-pay-it-forward-campaign.

“Just go online, buy a gift card and we’ll email it back to you so it’s contactless,” explained Francis.
