Georgetown advances to Massive East championship recreation | Collegiate & UConn Sports activities
Georgetown was selected last in the season’s Big East Conference in a preseason poll of coaches. That was not lost to coach Patrick Ewing when he celebrated a trip to the league’s championship game.
“You had us last. And now we’re playing in the championship game, ”said Ewing of Zoom. “It’s not what others think of you, it’s what you think of yourself. And my boys think very highly of themselves. And I appreciate them very much too. “
Eighth Georgetown scored the nine of the game’s last 10 points, beating Seton Hall 66-58 No. 5 in the Big East Tournament semi-finals at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.
Georgetown is the lowest seed for the Big East championship game since UConn # 9 made it there and won in 2011.
The Hoyas, who sent Villanova off the field on Thursday, have won seven of their last nine games. Both losses went to UConn.
Jamorko Pickett set a game high of 19 points for Georgetown (12-12) while Dante Harris added 15 points. Pickett also helped get Seton Hall star Sandro Mamukelashvili on a 3v16 shoot.
“He did a fantastic job. He fought hard. He kicked off hard. Sometimes he talked rubbish, a little too much rubbish, but he did a fantastic job, ”said Ewing.
Chudier Galles three-point game with 1:36 broke a 57:57 tie and put the Hoyas finally in the lead. He drove down the street, absorbing a tough foul from Seton Hall center Ike Obiagu, and was still able to finish.
“That was a big piece, a big boys game,” said Ewing.
Harris put the game away after being fouled and attempting a 3-pointer to pocket all three free throws 21 seconds before the end.
Jared Rhoden led Seton Hall (14-13) with 22 points. Mamukelashvili had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates, but the Tri-Big East Player of the Year only took one of his first 13 shots in the game.
The loss likely ended the Pirates’ chances on a general bid for the NCAA tournament. And coach Kevin Willard said it was unlikely that his team would accept an offer for the NIT.
“I didn’t really think about it much at that moment. I’m not one hundred percent sure that this will be the best for this team. I wouldn’t play Sandro in the NIT, ”said Willard. “I have some seniors who – I’m not sure if going to a hotel in Texas is best for my seniors. But I’ll have a conversation with you later. But right now I tend not to do it just because of the fact that we’ve been through everything all year. “
Georgetown took an 11-4 lead early on when Seton Hall missed four of his first shots in the game. Pickett hit two early 3-pointers and had eight points as the Hoyas extended their lead to 22-13.
It was 32-21 in a Qudus Wahab three-point game before the Pirates finally came to life. Seton Hall finished half-time with a 13-4 run, mostly to Rhoden.
Seton Hall had fallen just 36-34 at halftime after being 11 behind.
Seton Hall managed to take the lead 6:19 53-52, his first lead since the game was 2-0 but would not lead again.
