Late penalty helps Nimes win and transfer out of relegation zone | Sports activities
PARIS (AP) – Striker Renaud Ripart scored a late penalty when Nimes beat Lorient 1-0 in the French league on Wednesday to leave the relegation zone and place Lorient there instead.
Nimes have won three straight games without conceding a goal and are in 17th place, while Lorient fell back to 19th after a second straight defeat.
Ripart confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way on 88 minutes after a Lorient defender handled the ball after a corner.
In a balanced first half, Nimes midfielder Haris Duljevic missed a good chance and Lorient defender Julien Laporte hit the bar with a powerful shot from 25 yards.
Lorient missed again when striker Terem Mefi’s header hit a post early in the second half.
The game was postponed from the 21st round following a coronavirus outbreak in the Lorient squad.
Lorient’s undefeated five-game league game ended last weekend in a 4-1 home defeat to leaders Lille.
