Man arrested following hostage scenario at Ville Platte enterprise

A 20-year-old man was arrested earlier this month after police responded to a report of a hostage situation in a shop in Ville Platte.

Police said Patrick K. Dupre of Ville Platte was arrested from a shop on the 200 block on Tate Cove Road after the March 1 incident.

Chief Neal Lartigue says that upon arrival an officer learned that a male suspect was in the shop with a knife and had locked the door so no one could leave the building.

According to Lartigue, the officer gave orders and the suspect released the knife but then allegedly tried to retrieve the knife.

During this time, Lartigue said, the officer hit the suspect at various times in the leg with a baton because the suspect allegedly continued to disobey verbal commands and cause property damage.

After several orders to come to the ground, Lartigue says the officer sprayed Dupre with OC spray.

Police say Dupre then jumped over a counter and tried to escape.

After police determined there was no escape, Dupre jumped back over the counter, where he was knocked to the ground by two citizens.

Dupre was handcuffed. According to Lartigue, the officer allegedly found synthetic marijuana and a clear crystal-like substance in Dupre’s possession.

He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center and released a short time later.

Dupre was sent to Ville Platte City Prison on charges of Schedule II possession, possession with intent to distribute, improper detention with a dangerous weapon, resisting a police officer with violence or violence, and simple criminal damage to property.

He was placed in the Evangeline Parish Jail without ties.

Chief Neal Lartigue is reminding citizens to report suspicious or illegal activity by calling the Ville Platte Police Department on 363-1313. Calls remain anonymous.
