Mets’ Lugo wants elbow surgical procedure, will miss begin of season | Sports activities

NEW YORK (AP) – The Mets pitching team had scored a goal before spring training began when the team announced on Saturday that Seth Lugo needed elbow surgery and would miss the start of the season.

An MRI revealed a bone spur in the right-hander’s pitching shoulder. The Mets Medical Director, Dr. David Altchek, will operate at the hospital for specialty surgery on Tuesday.

Lugo will not throw for six weeks, then it will be judged and switched to a throwing program. This timeline means he wouldn’t start throwing until April 1st. He won’t be ready to play until well into the season.

The Mets said a bone spur broke during Lugo’s increased exercise, leading to spring training. The inflammation would not subside, and Lugo recently briefed medical staff.

Lugo, 31, was 3-4 with a 5.15 ERA in seven starts and nine reliefs during the 2020 season shortened by the pandemic. In mid-August, he switched to rotation to replace a stalled Steven Matz. Lugo was one of the longest-running helpers in 2019 with a 2.70 ERA over 80 innings in 61 games.

Lugo agreed to a $ 2.9 million one-year deal last month and should be back in the bullpen this season as Edwin Díaz’s setup man.
