Basketball legend Michael Jordan donates $ 10 million to open two medical clinics in underserved communities near his home town in North Carolina.
Novant Health clinics are slated to open in New Hanover County on North Carolina’s southeast coast in early 2022, according to a statement from the system. Jordan previously gave $ 7 million to open the Michael Jordan Family Clinics in Charlotte in 2019 and 2020. These clinics have since seen more than 4,500 patients and administered nearly 1,000 COVID-19 vaccines, Novant said.
“Everyone should have access to quality health care regardless of where they live or whether they are insured or not,” Jordan said in a statement.
Novant said the new clinics would provide services to “more rural and rural communities” and to those who are uninsured or underinsured.
“This pandemic has exacerbated the health equity gaps in our state and made our efforts to address them even more apparent. We look forward to getting these clinics up and running as soon as possible to ensure that all members of the community have access to the medical care they need, ”said Carl Armato, CEO of Novant.
Jordan grew up in Wilmington before playing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He later played 15 seasons in the NBA and won six championships with the Chicago Bulls.
“Wilmington has a special place in my heart and it is really great to be able to give back to the community that has supported me all my life,” he said.
