ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Albert Pujols’ wife apparently announced that the Los Angeles Angels Slugger will be retiring after the coming season, although she later changed her social media post to be less definitive.
The 41-year-old Pujols, three-time MVP and ten-time all-star, reported on spring training with the angels on Monday.
Later that day, Deidre Pujols wrote in a post on her Instagram account: “Today is the first day of last season’s one of the most remarkable careers in sport!” Shortly afterwards, she changed the statement with a bracket “based on his contract”.
Pujol’s 10-year $ 240 million deal with the Angels ends after this season, his 21st in the majors. However, the fifth-best home run hitter in major league history has repeatedly refused to say if this season will be his last, and he reiterated his uncertainty in an interview with ESPN Deportes earlier this month.
Pujols is the oldest player in the majors, a decade away from his St. Louis heyday. From 2001 to 2011 he won three NL MVP awards and two World Series titles with the Cardinals, but did not come close to those achievements with the Angels.
Deidre Pujols praised her husband on Instagram “when he finished this good race”.
“God is not done with you yet, my dear, and by the time you finish this season I know that another journey full of goodness is already waiting for you on the other side,” wrote Deidre Pujols. “Thanks for 21 years of incredible baseball thrills! Finish strong like the angel you are and I know that you will inspire us as usual for the whole of the 2021 season! 700 we come after you. “
