CINCINNATI (AP) – Hamilton County’s Clerk Aftab Pureval and longtime City Councilor David Mann will qualify for the November election and compete for Cincinnati Mayor.
Pureval received 39% of the vote and Mann 29%, with all of the city’s districts reporting on Tuesday evening, according to unofficial results from the city.
Six candidates took part in the election. The race for Ohio’s third largest city is impartial, but the Democrats dominate the city’s politics.
Candidates included former Cincinnati policeman and Democratic State senator, Cecil Thomas, businessman Gavi Begtrup, retired firefighter Raffel Prophett, and educator Herman Najoli.
Pureval, a former Democratic Congress candidate and man who previously served as Cincinnati Mayor and also in Congress, succeed John Cranley. After an eight-year term of office, it is limited in time.
One of the top issues is governance of the city as the inner city opens up after a pandemic and the eradication of corruption after four councilors have been indicted on federal grounds since February 2020.
Cranley is preparing to run in the Democratic governor’s primary in 2022. Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley announced her Democratic candidacy for governor last month. Republican Governor Mike DeWine is expected to seek a second term.
