Sen. Bud Estes, a Republican from Dodge Metropolis, has died

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Ailing Republican Senator Bud Estes has died, the Senate leadership said in a press release on Saturday morning. He was 74 years old.

Senate President Ty Masterson said in a statement that Estes “had a kind and gentle spirit and was greatly respected by all who have served with him in the legislature”. Masterson spokesman Mike Pirner said Estes’ widow had informed lawmakers of his death and authorized his release.

Estes won re-election for a second term in November, representing a district in southwest Kansas that includes the Dodge City and Liberal areas.

He had been hospitalized for the past few months and had not been to Topeka for that session.
