Amira Rose Davis will deliver Sherman Aspiring scholar lecture on “From fists raised to knees bent: sport, protests and global politics” on March 24th at 7.30 pm. Davis will attend a round table panel discussion on March 25th at 7:00 pm. Both presentations are virtual.
Davis is an assistant professor of history and African American Studies from Pennsylvania State University WHO specializedis in the 20 .. cEntury American HHistory with an emphasis on race, gender, Sports and politicallys. She also provides sports commentary for media like NPR, ESPN and BBC and is the co-host of the podcast “Burn it All Down”.
She will examine such as race, gender, and exercise to have intersected with politics. It focuses on the period after World War II and analyzes the role black women athletes played on the global stage when the US, Cuba and other governments vied for power and influence.
Her lecture will be followed by a discussion on March 25th at 7 p.m. In addition to Davis, panelists are also present in addition to Marcia Chatelain, Georgetown University. Jay Smith, UNC-Chapel Hill; Deborah White, Rutgers University; and Louis Moore, Grand Valley State University. The moderator is Glen Harris, Associate Professor of History at the UNCW.
The Sherman Aspiring scholar lecture series was established by Philip Sherman and Ann Sherman-Skiba along with their spouses in honor of their parents Virginia and Derrick Sherman. The oldest Shermans were lifelong learners who particularly appreciated this Hhistory ddepartment public programs.
“For the past 19 years, the Sherman Lecture has presented the work and ideas of emerging scientists whose research will shape history education and understanding for years to come, ”said Lynn Mollenauer, Chairman of the Department of History. “We look forward to Dr. Davis’ talk examining activism in sport from a historical perspective Position, but that will appeal to contemporary audiences as well. ”
