Sports activities, bars, pupil teams amongst ‘different elements’ touchdown College of Michigan prime rating in new report

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan ranks among the top universities in the country in a number of traditional rankings, but is also the top school in the US based on “alternative factors” according to a new report from Match College.

Match College’s Ultimate Alternative College Guide 2021 analyzed 50 of the country’s largest universities in terms of bars, quality of life, safety, participation in sports, student organizations, and sustainability. Out of a total of 100 points, UM received 75.4, more than 10 points more than the nearest university.

In particular, UM took first place in the categories of sports participation and student organizations, second place in the number of bars around the campus and fourth place in terms of quality of life outside of the classroom. The lowest rankings were achieved in the areas of sustainability and crime, with UM ranking 33rd and 35th, respectively.

Approximately 3.26% of students are part of a sports team at UM, which is the highest percentage among the colleges in the report. UM also has around 1,500 student organizations, according to the report.

For the Bars category, Match College used Yelp to determine the number of bars within a mile of campus. Only New York University had more than 58 UM bars near campus, the report shows.

The Quality of Life category measures how satisfied students are with their life outside of the classroom, including the location and beauty of campus, the comfort of the dormitories, and the quality of the food. Prior to UM in this category were Washington State University, Auburn University, and Pennsylvania State University.

In the Security category, Match College measured the number of crimes between 2001 and 18 per 10,000 students according to the US Department of Education campus security data. The report shows that UM had 639 crimes during this period.
