Tampa Police Officer Killed in Improper-Means, I-275 Crash
TAMPA, Florida – A Tampa police officer was killed in a wrong-way traffic accident.
Master Patrol Officer Jesse Madsen, a 45-year-old highly decorated officer who was a 16-year veteran of the department, was killed.

The Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said the crash happened just before 1:00 a.m. on Interstate 275 near Hillsborough Avenue in the northbound lanes.
Interstate 275 was for several hours in both directions between E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and E. Sligh Ave.
The Tampa Police Department received calls at 1:00 a.m. about a white limousine traveling north on the lanes of I-275 at high speed and turning through the lanes.
Within a minute of the original call, the vehicle crashed into Officer Madsen’s police vehicle between the Hillsborough and Sligh Avenue exits.
The impact killed both ofc. Madsen and the 25 year old male driver of the white limousine. Ofc was accompanied by a police escort. Madsen’s body to the coroner early Tuesday.

Madsen was husband and father of three and a marine. He was a seven-time lifesaving award winner. He is the 32nd Tampa police officer to die on duty.
“This is a tragedy,” said Dugan. “Our community has been shaken by these wrong-way drivers. And it’s just an utter tragedy that a husband and father of four is gone now.”
The crash is being investigated further.
