tDCS Program | NYU Langone Well being

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a type of non-invasive brain stimulation that can be used in the treatment of depression and anxiety, as well as cognitive, language, or motor symptoms related to conditions such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and other movement disorders. NYU Langone’s tDCS program offers in-home tDCS sessions tailored to your individual needs and therapeutic goals, under video surveillance via the NYU Langone Health App.

During tDCS, a small electrical current is applied through electrodes placed on the scalp with a headset. The stimulation changes the activity in the brain by making it easier for neurons to fire, which can help improve brain connections. Over time, this treatment can relieve symptoms, such as depression.

If the goal is rehabilitation, stimulation can be combined with exercise activities to increase benefits. For example, you can apply stimulation while exercising with a therapist or using one of our digital health programs for cognitive or speech and language training, or during sedentary motor exercises as directed by a physiotherapist.

tDCS treatment

Our experts from the tDCS program will talk to you and ask you a few questions about your health. After determining that you are eligible for this service, we offer a clinical assessment that can be repeated over time to track your progress. You will be given a tDCS device on that first visit and our experts will train you to use it to complete your sessions from home. The team offers you a customized tDCS setup, including electrode placement and stimulation intensity, as well as associated training activities, to maximize your results.

At the start of each session, connect with one of our experts using the NYU Langone Health app. All visits, including registration, can be done remotely through the app. Each treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes.

You can schedule TDCS sessions as you wish. We recommend completing sessions with at least 10 sessions daily or almost daily to assess whether you are getting any benefits. The program is currently not insured, but we offer bundled sessions to reduce the cost per session. The equipment will be loaned to you as part of the program. Your first visit can be reimbursed by your insurance.

If you are participating in a rehabilitation program, we can work with your therapist, e. Work together, for example physical, professional, linguistic or psychotherapeutic, to add tDCS to your current therapeutic program.
