Los Angeles is ready for a cat cafe. It was clear two years ago when the temporary Catfe The Chinatown pop-up was bullied throughout its four-day lifespan so that the city’s cat-believers could queue for a room where they could fondle each other while sipping delicious beers. After all, LA already has one Doggo Cafewhere patrons can swing through to pick up coffee mugs or rescue puppies. Now, Crumbs & Whiskers Cat lovers can do the same on Melrose Avenue.
Like their first location in Washington DC, the LA Crumbs work with a local animal shelter – in this case Karma salvation– to provide a temporary home for cats in need when they are rescued and adopted. The cats chosen for the cafe are sociable and get along well with people. During my visit, I could see that the cats were comfortable and very happy while they played with toys and ricocheted off the cat-friendly furniture.
Setting up a trip to Crumbs is easy, but requires some advance planning. You reserve online and pay a fee of $ 22 per person, saving 75 minutes of cat time. During this time, you can play, take photos, pet or even talk to any of the cats that you like. Places fill up pretty quickly, especially on weekends. On arrival, you can purchase drinks from a selection of espresso drinks, iced coffee and teas. The proceeds from the sale of drinks are used to care for the cats. In LA, Crumbs is partnered with Open space Just a few blocks away – that’s where orders are placed and delivered.
Crumbs is designed to encourage interaction – a small nook with soft, fluffy pillows encourages sitting on the floor and mixing cats and people. There are around 15 to 20 cats out and about at any given time. While some are resting or sleeping, a wide variety of toys keep them energetic cozy.
If you fall in love with a cat during your visit to Crumbs, you can adopt them through Karma Rescue. So far, there have been 26 adoptions in LA and a total of 182, including those in the DC location. Whichever side of the country you’re on, a new family member is just a cafe trip away.
