Turkey Giveaways Throughout LA Assist Households In Want Throughout Thanksgiving – CBS Los Angeles
WESTLAKE (CBSLA) – Thanksgiving celebrations could look a little different this year.
Aside from restrictions on travel and collecting, many families are struggling to put food on the table due to the financial consequences of the pandemic.
Hundreds of these families lined up at Rampart Police Station in Westlake District for a take-away turkey giveaway Saturday morning for much-needed help.
“The community really needs to help now,” said Derek Alvarado, one of the organizers of the event. “We have a chance to offer that and we would like to.”
The Saturday morning giveaway also delivered produce and other groceries to keep groceries on the table all week, not just on Thanksgiving. Some of the food was provided by the LA Food Bank, but the turkeys were bought one at a time by someone – volunteers, organizers, and others – who wanted to help a needy family this holiday season.
Adolfo Escobar waited in line for hours for free groceries – something he said he wished he didn’t need it.
“It’s not easy,” he said. “I lost my job, four months with no income. My wife works 3 or 4 hours a day. So it’s very difficult. “
Escobar is not alone. The line began to form at 6 a.m. and wrapped around the block within an hour.
“It’s the same wherever they hand out food for the community,” said another food recipient, Claudia Arrezola.
The turkey giveaway was one of many held across town in the past few days. There are three on Saturday.
On Friday, the LA Clippers held a drive-through grocery giveaway at the Inglewood Forum.
“You really can’t get very close because of the COVID rules, but just the smiles on the children’s faces and the smiles on the parents ‘faces is why you do that,” said Patrick Beverley, the clippers’ guardian . “It’s why you do this.”
