Wofford wins program’s 1st February recreation, 31-14 over Mercer | Sports activities
SPARTANBURG, SC (AP) – Irvin Mulligan ran 90 yards and a touchdown and Wofford opened his season on Saturday with a 31-14 win over Mercer at the start of the Southern Conference for both teams.
It was the first game in school history that the terriers played in February (1-0). It was the first time since 1892 that the Bears (0-4) played in the spring.
Mulligan opened the scoring on the second run of the three-time SoCon defending champion, using a short field after the first of Mercer’s three lost fiddles. Ryan Lovelace scored a 17-0 win with 11 games and 70 yards with 1:11 in the half.
Mercer’s Deondre Johnson scored a 4-yard touchdown run on the first run of the third quarter, but Wofford immediately responded with a touchdown score capped by Nathan Walker’s 2-yard run, leading up early in the fourth quarter Jamari Broussards 31-7 12 yard TD run.
Nakendrick Clark ran 17 times for 67 yards for Mercer.
